I wanted to sink through the floor in shame when my boss opened “that” cupboard
I had a bad dream once.
After a particularly busy week at work I looked forward to just relaxing. But Friday night the phone rang. It was my boss. He and his wife wanted to come over.
Sure, we had discussed getting together sometime. But now?!
Struggling to come up with a believable excuse, I had to say yes. After all, it was the boss. And I had been working my butt off at work for a promotion.
The problem: my place looked a complete mess. Being busy all week I hadn’t had time for cleaning. There was stuff all over the place and my guests were coming in 30 minutes.
Panicked I quickly vacuumed the hall and living room while simultaneously picking up the items lying around. Everything from old newspapers to my tennis racket. I quickly shoved most of it in the nearest cupboard. I had just managed to change shirts when the doorbell rang.
Hoping that I didn’t look too flustered I welcomed them in. As I was helping the bosses wife with her coat I watched in horror as he removed his hat and moved towards the cupboard.
No! Not that doo…
I didn’t get to finish the sentence. With a crash and a cloud of dust my boss stood to his ankles in my assorted trash. I could see the mixture of surprise and contempt in his eyes. My face burned red with humiliation.
Then I woke up.
I immediately thought about how I had to get around to organizing the (real world) closet in my apartment. The thing looked like you would need a running start just to get through the door!
But you know how it goes. Despite good intentions and a few half hearted attempts I never quite got it done. Not properly anyway.
Three simple steps to a clean and organized home
Later, I was telling a friend about my dream and the still rather cluttered closet. I told her I found this rather strange, since I’m otherwise a responsible and hard working guy.
But don’t you know how easy it is to declutter your home for good, she responded. Just follow this simple formula: purge, sort and store.
Feeling a bit offended by such a simple statement I started to protest… but as she patiently explained the strategy further, I realized how right she was. The devil was in the details, so to speak.
The very next weekend I got the whole closet organized. And even more amazingly, it stayed that way. Now I live in a bigger home, have a family and am happy to report that this simple approach keeps our entire house in good order.
